Concarneau Driver Service

Professional driver service in Concarneau, famous for its Vauban-fortified Walled Town and industrial fishing port, third French port by tonnage. Filets Bleus Festival in August.

Concarneau, third French fishing port by tonnage and one of Europe's leading tuna ports, has 19,000 inhabitants and is a major centre of Breton maritime culture. The Walled Town, a fortified citadel built on a rocky islet and connected to the mainland by a bridge, preserves the ramparts designed by Vauban in the 17th century. This granite enclosure, ranked among the most beautiful French military monuments, today houses a maze of cobbled streets, craft shops, seafood restaurants and the Fishing Museum. The fishing port, distinct from the Walled Town but visible from its ramparts, hosts a fleet of oceanic tuna purse seiners operating in the tropical Atlantic and Indian Ocean. This fleet, one of the largest in Europe, catches skipjack, yellowfin and bigeye tuna for Saupiquet group canneries and for export. The Concarneau auction, modernised in 2014, processes hundreds of tonnes of seafood daily. The city also hosts the National Maritime School (ENSM) Concarneau site, which trains merchant marine officers, and the Marinarium, marine station of the National Museum of Natural History. The Filets Bleus Festival, created in 1905 to support fishermen's families in difficulty, takes place each mid-August and is one of the oldest festivals in Brittany. The event gathers 100,000 visitors around traditional music and dance shows, embroidered costume demonstrations, bagadoù parades and concerts by Breton and international artists. Beyond Concarneau, our driver service covers the entire south coast of Finistère, from Pont-Aven 13 kilometres away to Lorient 50 kilometres away.

Walled Town and industrial fishing tourism

The Walled Town of Concarneau is the main tourist site in the city and one of the most visited monuments in Finistère with over one million annual visitors. The citadel, built progressively between the 14th and 17th centuries, reaches its final configuration under Vauban who reinforces the ramparts to resist modern artillery. The enclosure forms a quadrilateral 350 metres long by 100 metres wide, pierced by several gates. The Fishing Museum, installed in the former arsenal, retraces the history of fishing techniques with ship reconstructions and traditional fishing tools. The fishing port, separated from the Walled Town by the Nouveau-Port basin, is a fascinating industrial attraction. Oceanic tuna purse seiners, 80 to 100 metres long, set sail for several months in the Pacific, tropical Atlantic or Indian Ocean, and their returns to the port give rise to spectacular unloading of hundreds of tonnes of frozen tuna. The Concarneau auction, open to visitors by reservation, presents the entire process of unloading, weighing and auctioning fish.
